12 Solid Surface Fabrications That Will Blow Your Mind

Solid surfacing is great for commercial applications, especially healthcare and food industry, because 1)  it's non-porous, 2) With proper maintenance, it does not promote the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria, 3) it meets all of the 18 preferred characteristics outlined in the 2006 Guidelines for Design and Construction of Hospital and Health Care Facilities as an ideal healthcare surface to help facilitate improved infection control, and 4) it's Class Ι (A) fire rated.

When you think of solid surface, you probably think about countertops, restroom vanities and partitions,  and wainscoting and wall cladding. Zodiaq is nonporous and when properly cleaned does not promote the growth of mold, mildew or bacteria.

And you'd be correct, but you're a designer, why limit yourself?

Solid surface can be thermoformed into custom shapes and contours, sandblasted, routed, carved, and laser etched.  CNC machines can be  used to engrave solid surfacing to the most intricate detail.  It can be thermoplastically molded to create raised textures and patterns and three-dimensional shapes. Certain colors and thicknesses of solid surfacing become translucent when exposed to light.

With a little imagination and a great fabricator (the fabricator is key here), solid surfacing has nearly limitless applications.

Check out these amazing projects that prove solid surfacing isn't just for countertops:

Elixir Product Fix: Alkemi Recycled Metal Surfaces

Alkemi-acrylic is a gorgeous surfacing material with SCS certfied 96% recycled content & VOC free.  Alkemi-acrylic can be recycled endlessly after its life cycle, making it the ultimate sustainable surfacing product in the marketplace.

Alkemi Installed @ 2 Lads Winery in Traverse City
Architect of Record: David Spala
Fabricator: : Grand Valley Wood Products
Photographers: Pat Garrett, Paul Osborne
via Alkemi
Alkemi-acrylic is made using pre-consumer waste aluminum flake, solid surface scrap, and recycled acrylic.  Alkemi can be installed by a mill worker or caseworker with using with conventional tools and fabrication methods.

Alkemi-acrylic is offered in sheet sizes of 36"x72” and 48"x96”, sheets are 5/8" thick.  Available in matte (a high gloss finish can be achieved by your fabricator) and 20 different colors. My favorite colors from their offerings are Lazuli (left) & Aquarius (right):

Lazuli 720
Aquarius 730

Things to keep in mind if you plan to specify Alkemi-Acrylic:
  1. Limited heat tolerance, Protective trivets should be used to protect the surface from hot pots.
  2. A stainless steel insert or transition should be used for installation of burners and cooktops.
  3. Stain resistant against most common liquids. Acidic liquids, including red wine, if left to remain on the surface for extended period of time can stain.
  4. Stains and scuffs can be sanded and polished off to restore the surface by qualified fabricators.
  5. Can be used horizontally or vertically in interior applications, but  will require full substrate support.

Polka Dot Interiors: Product Round Up

Whether you decide to go all out or just want an accent of the polka-dot trend that graced runways for Fall 2011, I've rounded up fun interior products, from floor to ceiling and everything in between, to get the polka dot party started. Polka Music optional (and strongly discouraged).

STYLING
Polka dots are a classic pattern that can work with any style; traditional, contemporary, or modern. Polka dots bring an interior to life by creating movement and adding a touch of whimsy. In subdued colors, polka dots can be soft. While contrasting colors pack a bold, graphic punch. Keep in mind dots on white backgrounds pop more than a dots on dark backgrounds.  And remember, polka dots aren't limited to pattern, it can also be a texture. When designing with polka dots, pay attention to scale and color. One false move and a sophisticated space becomes a child's room.

Top 6: Wallcovering + Technology

I had intended to post this link ages ago and it got lost in my sea of bookmarks.  Although it is months later, these wall coverings are no less remarkable. If you are interested in seeing the future of wall covering, check out Design Boom's Creative and Unusual Wall Coverings and Wallpaper Designs.

There are some unusual and thought provoking patterns.  However, I love products that encourage occupants to interact with their environment, so my favorites from Design Boom's selection are the ones that are influenced by Science and Technology. These wallcoverings are unlike anything you have seen before; they glow in the dark, they are alive, they are react to heat or sound, they are animated. On the downside, I would guess that most of these are still in the prototype phase or one time installations....

Top Six Innovative Wall Coverings

1. iiiiiit's alive!
I saw this in Contract Magazine or Interior Design Magazine last year.  This Living Green wall covering was used in the inteiror and exterior of Ann Demeulemeester's  store in Seoul, Korea by Mass Studies Architects (also in Seoul, Korea).
2. Afterglow
Glow in the dark paint isn't a new idea. You've probably had glow in the dark stars on your bedroom ceiling at some point in your life and and you've probably seen the safety photoluminescent egress path markers that have been out for a few years. Phosphowall is a bit more sophisticated, by using special phosphorescent ink, this wallpaper glows when the lights are turned off.  Designed by Ich & Kar, France.

Not until I have my coffee....

In the spring and summer, I take my used coffee grounds and fertilize my plants with it.  I've never looked at them and thought, hmmm, if I melt down my creamer container & add some coffee grinds, I could make a cool countertop material.

But the fellas @Re-worked did.  Reworked developed Curface, a 99% post-consumer recycled surfacing material composed of recycled coffee grounds and post-consumer plastic waste. Coffee ground waste from office, cafes and factories across the United Kingdom are gathered, cleaned and sterilized before being mixed and turned into sheet goods.

recipe
Here are the details on the material:
  • Standard sheet size is 2000mm by 1000mm (6.5' x 3.25') and available in 5 (.19"), 12 (.47"), 18 (.70") and 25mm (.98") thicknesses.
  • Curface is comparable to composite wood boards, most woodwork tools can be used. (I'd verify the specific tools with the manufacturer before cutting.)
  • Sheets have a matte pressed finish and should require no additional finishing. (No lacquer, no stains, no sealants = no added VOCs!)
  • Scratches can be sanded out with fine grit sand paper.
  • Clean with a mild detergent and warm water, do not use any solvent cleaners.
  • Curface an not be exposed to excessive heat or boiling water. This will cause the material to melt and burn.
  • Visit this link to see the potential color range
  • Custom colors available for large orders

Curface is brand spanking new. It was officially launched March 2010 at EcoBuild in London and they are currently working on a coffee shop installation in Milan. I'm jealous. Europe always has the coolest products.  All I can do is sit back and wait for Curface to come to the US.  I hope it will be approved for use in commercial applications.

Here are some images of Curface chairs Reworked has created with designer Nick Rawcliffe. The ash wood used for the legs and back came from an Ash tree that was cut down back 2005.  I have no idea how much it costs, but Adam and Nick will sign the first 50 chairs sold. And look, they made cute little bears from the left over Ash wood ( I want one!)

I wonder how many cupppa joes it takes to make a 4x8 sheet. And I wonder if you could do the same thing with tea leaves....
